‘67’ Crowned Word of the Year After Taking the Internet by Storm

In a year defined by memes, digital chaos, and cultural mashups, the unlikely winner of “Word of the Year” isn’t really a word at all; it’s a number. “67” has been crowned the world’s most influential linguistic phenomenon of the year, after dominating social media conversations, music lyrics, and even everyday slang. The simple two-digit number has taken on meanings far beyond mathematics, symbolizing irony, rebellion, and the absurd humor of online culture.

According to the Global Language Institute (GLI), which announced the selection on Thursday, “67” beat out strong contenders like “rizz,” “delulu,” and “AI-fied.” The panel described it as “a number that evolved into a symbol of collective identity in the digital age, nonsensical, viral, and oddly unifying.” The institute’s annual Word of the Year list, which tracks the world’s most influential linguistic trends, has in the past featured more conventional winners such as “selfie,” “climate emergency,” and “vax.” But this year’s choice signals how dramatically the way we communicate has changed in the internet era.

The rise of “67” began quietly in early 2025, when it started circulating as a mysterious meme on platforms like X, TikTok, and Reddit. Users would simply comment “67” under random posts, from celebrity photos to political debates, leaving others confused and intrigued. Soon, creators began spinning wild theories about its meaning. Some claimed it represented “the number of times we’ve been disappointed this year,” while others insisted it was an inside joke born from gaming culture. The mystery only fueled the trend further, and within weeks, “67” became a digital code for everything from sarcasm to silent protest.

By mid-year, brands, influencers, and musicians had all jumped on the trend. A viral song titled Route 67 topped streaming charts in multiple countries, while fashion brands released limited-edition “67” hoodies and sneakers. Even politicians weren’t immune. One European minister accidentally triggered a meme frenzy after tweeting “67 reasons to believe in the future,” which users quickly hijacked to flood her replies with jokes and edits. The number had officially become a global inside joke, a shared wink between millions of people who didn’t necessarily know what it meant, but felt connected by the absurdity of it all.

Linguists say that’s exactly what makes “67” so powerful. “It’s post-language communication,” said Dr. Naomi Fraser, a sociolinguist at Oxford University. “People use ‘67’ to express irony, solidarity, or even emotional exhaustion without needing context. It’s minimal, flexible, and perfectly suited for the digital attention span.” She compared it to earlier internet phenomena like “OK Boomer” or the skull emoji (💀) used to signal laughter. “The difference,” she added, “is that ‘67’ has no fixed meaning, and that’s why it works. It’s a blank canvas for modern expression.”

Critics, however, say the choice reflects the decay of meaningful communication. Some language purists argue that elevating a random number to “Word of the Year” trivializes linguistic evolution. “It’s a gimmick,” said writer and cultural commentator Paul Rioux. “It tells us that language is being replaced by symbols and in-jokes. We’re losing nuance.” Yet even Rioux admitted that the number’s rise was “a fascinating reflection of our time, where virality matters more than vocabulary.”

Still, for millions online, “67” has transcended its origins to become something almost comforting. It’s the digital shrug, the inside joke everyone’s in on, the perfect response when words fail. Whether posted as a reaction, a meme, or even a protest chant, “67” captures the strange, absurd rhythm of life in 2025 — a year when humor, confusion, and connection all merged into a single viral code.

As the GLI’s statement put it, “In an age when words divide, a number united us — even if nobody really knows why.” And perhaps that’s the beauty of “67.” It means nothing, and somehow, it means everything.
