Buganda Bumu Convention Unites Diaspora in Celebration of Culture and Mental Health Awareness

The 10th edition of the Buganda Bumu North America Convention (BBNAC) came to a successful close, marking a decade of cultural pride, unity, and renewed commitment among the Buganda diaspora in the U.S. and Canada. Hundreds of attendees gathered under this year’s theme of cultural preservation, community well-being, and mental health awareness, reinforcing the importance of staying connected to their roots while addressing modern challenges.

Presiding over the closing ceremony, Katikkiro of Buganda Charles Peter Mayiga delivered a powerful message from Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II, urging attendees to prioritize mental health, personal wellness, and strong family ties. He reminded the audience that the strength of Buganda lies not only in its traditions but also in the care and support its people show one another.

“Our heritage is not only in our traditions but also in how we care for each other—physically, mentally, and emotionally,” Mayiga said. He cautioned against misinformation and encouraged reliance on official kingdom channels for accurate guidance. “The strength of Buganda lies in our unity and in walking the path outlined by Ssaabasajja Kabaka.”

The Katikkiro also highlighted the Kingdom’s dedication to meeting the changing needs of the diaspora while safeguarding Buganda’s core values. He praised the convention for advancing the Kingdom’s five key pillars—unity, culture, economic development, health, and education.

Joseph Kawuki, representing the Ministry for Buganda Affairs Abroad, expressed deep gratitude to the organizers and participants for their unwavering support. He acknowledged the convention’s role in mobilizing resources and strengthening ties between the Kingdom and its people overseas.

“The commitment of the Abaana ba Nambi—our brothers and sisters in North America—is evident and inspiring,” Kawuki said. “Your continued collaboration helps propel the kingdom forward, both in the diaspora and back home.”

Henry Matovu Ndawula, another key speaker, thanked attendees and expressed hope that they would return to their communities with a stronger sense of belonging and purpose. A special message from the Kabaka’s representatives in North America was delivered by Wycliffe Lule Musoke Ssemwogerere, Regional Representative for the North East Coast (New York/New Jersey). He reaffirmed the diaspora leaders’ dedication to supporting Kingdom initiatives and amplifying the Kabaka’s vision beyond Uganda’s borders.

Held in Toronto, Canada, this year’s convention featured a vibrant mix of cultural exhibitions, panel discussions, wellness workshops, and networking sessions. These activities were designed to strengthen cultural bonds and promote the overall well-being of Buganda’s sons and daughters abroad.

As the event concluded, attendees left with a renewed commitment to preserving Buganda’s legacy, upholding its values, and supporting the vision of Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II. The success of the 2025 BBNAC convention not only celebrated a decade of cultural unity but also set the stage for continued growth and connection among the Buganda diaspora in the years to come.
