Efforts Target Outbreak Prevention with Vaccines and Public Awareness
Kinshasa, DRC – The Democratic Republic of Congo has started an emergency vaccination campaign in the highly populated area of Pakadjuma within the Limete health zone, Kinshasa. Spearheaded by the Ministry of Public Health, in collaboration with the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention among other partners, the vaccination was meant to stop the continued spread of Mpox (previously known as monkeypox).
The campaign, which was announced earlier in the week, aims to prevent further spread of the virus through the protection of vulnerable groups and the breaking of chains of transmission. Public health authorities are also placing high emphasis on raising awareness to ensure proper management of identified cases.
Pakadjuma: A Hotspot for the Outbreak
Paka Djuma is one of the most overpopulated neighborhoods in Kinshasa and enjoys minimal health care; hence, it has become the focal point in the fight against Mpox. Public health officials have expressed concern over the rapid rise in cases in this part of Kinshasa.
Our first and foremost objective is to safeguard the most vulnerable and ensure access to care for all in need,” said one official from the Ministry of Public Health.
Mpox is a viral zoonotic disease transmitted through close contact with infected persons, animals, or contaminated items. Common symptoms include fever, rash, and swollen lymph nodes. The disease usually resolves without treatment; however, complications may set in if left unaddressed in time.
Combining Vaccines with Public Education
The drive includes, apart from the vaccination drive, a very strong awareness drive to sensitize residents about the symptoms of Mpox, its prevention, and early seeking of medical care. Health teams are being trained in specialized management of Mpox cases to offer effective and compassionate treatment.
“We want to empower the communities with information and make sure our healthcare workers are ready for response,” he added.
A Continental Push to Combat Mpox
This campaign comes amid broader efforts by the Africa CDC to strengthen health systems and support African countries to fight outbreaks such as Mpox.
“We are committed to supporting member states, including the DRC, in combating Mpox and other challenges of public health importance,” said a representative of the Africa CDC.
The vaccination rollout in Kinshasa signifies a major step in keeping the outbreak from spreading to the rest of the country. Public health authorities are appealing to residents of affected areas to cooperate with health workers and adhere to preventive guidelines such as maintaining good hygiene and avoiding contact with infected people.
A Critical Step in Containing the Outbreak
The targeted campaign in Pakadjuma highlights the importance of addressing health risks in urban areas with high population density and limited healthcare access. By combining vaccination efforts with public education and improved healthcare delivery, the DRC aims to control the outbreak and prevent further strain on its healthcare system.
The vaccination activities involved residents and called on their adherence to the recommendations made by health officials. Kinshasa’s battle against Mpox, with efforts by the local authorities, international organizations, and the community working collaboratively, reflects proactive interest in public health concerns.
This is not only about protecting lives in the short run but also serves as an example for the management of future outbreaks in similarly susceptible settings across Africa.
