Buganda Kingdom Launches Historic Shs2.9bn School Upgrade Project

The Buganda Kingdom has taken a bold step towards transforming education in its region with the launch of a multi-billion shilling infrastructure project. The ambitious initiative, unveiled at Lubili High School’s Buloba Campus, will see modern classroom blocks, libraries and administrative buildings constructed across schools in the kingdom.

During the colorful ceremony attended by education stakeholders and community leaders, First Deputy Katikkiro Hajj Twaha Kawaase emphasized the project’s importance for Buganda’s future. “When we invest in our children’s education, we invest in Buganda’s tomorrow,” Kawaase told the gathering. “These new facilities will create the right environment for our students to excel and become future leaders.”

Each new building under the project will cost approximately Shs2.9 billion, demonstrating the kingdom’s serious commitment to improving education standards. The initiative directly addresses pressing challenges like overcrowded classrooms, outdated facilities and limited learning resources that have hindered quality education in the region.

“For too long, our schools have operated under difficult conditions that affect teaching and learning,” Kawaase noted. “As leaders, we have a responsibility to change this situation and ensure all children access quality education regardless of their background.”

The launch event brought together teachers, parents and local leaders who unanimously welcomed the development. Buganda Kingdom Education Minister Cotilda Kikomeko stressed that while infrastructure is important, the human element remains crucial. “We’re building classrooms but we must also support our teachers and improve curricula,” she said, calling for continued parental involvement in children’s education.

Discussions at the event also explored potential partnerships with the Ugandan government, which shares the kingdom’s vision for education development. Government representatives present affirmed their willingness to support such initiatives that align with national education goals.

Kawaase issued a strong warning to contractors involved in the project, demanding strict adherence to quality standards and timelines. “We will accept nothing less than excellent workmanship,” he declared. “The materials used and construction deadlines must meet our specifications without compromise.”

Beyond education, the project promises significant economic benefits for local communities. Priority will be given to employing local labor, creating much-needed jobs for youth. Local businesses will also benefit as construction requires various materials and services.

“This project serves two important purposes,” Kawaase explained. “While improving our schools, it will also boost our local economy through job creation and business opportunities – a win-win situation for everyone.”

Environmental sustainability forms a key part of the project design. New buildings will incorporate energy-efficient features and eco-friendly construction methods. “We must protect our environment while developing our infrastructure,” Kawaase emphasized. “Buganda Kingdom is committed to development that respects our natural resources.”

At Lubili High School Buloba Campus, where the first building has been commissioned, headteacher Charles Ssebinna revealed the urgent need for improved facilities. “Our biggest challenge has been accommodating our growing number of female students,” he said. The new three-level dormitory block will house 900 students, significantly easing current congestion.

The education infrastructure project marks a major milestone in Buganda Kingdom’s development agenda. It reflects the kingdom’s determination to provide quality education while fostering community growth. As construction progresses, all stakeholders will work together to ensure the vision becomes reality, setting a new standard for education in the region.

With this initiative, Buganda Kingdom demonstrates its leadership in addressing education challenges through practical solutions. The project promises to transform learning environments, create economic opportunities and inspire similar developments across Uganda. As the first buildings take shape, students, teachers and parents await a new era of improved education in the kingdom.
