From News Anchor to Political Aspirant: Zambaali’s Journey to Serve the People

Legendary news anchor Bulasio Zambaali Mukasa, known for his commanding voice and dynamic presence on Uganda’s airwaves, has revealed his long-held dream of entering politics. Zambali, who has spent years hosting the political show Barometer on NBS Television and anchoring the Luganda news bulletin Amasengejje, recently announced his intention to run for the Nansana Municipality MP seat in the 2026 elections. His journey from media to politics, however, is not a sudden decision but the culmination of a dream he has nurtured since 2010.

In an exclusive interview on Sanyuka Television, Zambaali opened up about his political aspirations and the path that led him to this pivotal moment. “I didn’t just wake up one day and decide to enter politics. This dream has been with me since 2010. Even when I moved from Capital FM to Beat FM, my main goal was to serve the people politically,” he explained.

Zambaali’s journey into the public eye began in 2007 when he started his radio career at Tiger FM as a news anchor and presenter. Over the years, he worked at several prominent radio stations, including CBS FM, owned by the Buganda Kingdom. Reflecting on his time at CBS, Zambaali shared how the experience shaped his confidence and public speaking skills. “Being part of the Kingdom’s leadership exposes you to various communities, helping you understand how things function,” he said.

Despite his early interest in politics, Zambali admitted that he initially hesitated to pursue his ambitions. “At that time, I assessed my readiness and realized I wasn’t prepared. My heart was in it, but mentally, I felt I needed more time to prove to people that I could truly represent their voices,” he shared. This period of self-reflection and growth allowed him to build a strong foundation in media, where he became a trusted voice for many Ugandans.

Zambaali’s career reached new heights when he joined Next Media in 2019. As the host of Barometer Akaasameeme and an anchor for Amasengejje, he became a household name, known for his deep, resonant voice and insightful political commentary. He credits Kin Kariisa, the Chief Executive of Next Media Group, for encouraging him to explore his talents. “Kin Kariisa told me he loves multi-talented people, and since I was one, he encouraged me to explore any other talents I had,” Zambali recounted.

Now, at 39, Zambaali is ready to take the leap into politics. He has chosen to align himself with the National Unity Platform (NUP), led by Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine. Zambali believes that the power of the people will be key to his success. “This isn’t a sudden dream; it has been a part of me for a long time. I recognize that elections are challenging, but one reason I joined NUP is because of the power of the people. With their support, everything else becomes manageable,” he stated.

Zambaali’s decision to run for office is rooted in his desire to serve and advocate for the people of Nansana Municipality. He envisions himself as a voice for the voiceless, addressing issues such as education, healthcare, and youth empowerment. His experience as a journalist and community leader has equipped him with the skills to connect with people and understand their needs.

Born to the late John Wilson Segawole and Florence Sarah Nakalembe Namusisi, Zambaali was raised by his grandmother, Asinansi Nasimbwa, in Mugomola, Semuto. He completed his primary education at Kijaguzo Primary School and his O-Level studies at St. Denis Sebugwawo Kijaguzo Secondary School. He later attended Kazo Hill College School in Kampala for his A-Level education. Zambali holds a Diploma in Journalism and Mass Communication from UMCAT School of Journalism and Mass Communication and a Bachelor’s degree in Public Relations from Ndejje University.

Beyond his media career, Zambaali has been an active community leader, serving as a peer educator for organizations like Kiyita Alliance for Development and the Nabweru Orphan Support Project. He has also held leadership roles as the Chairperson of the Nabweru Youth Health Club and the Secretary for Nansana Youth Parish. Additionally, he is the director of Zabama Investment Limited, a wedding planning company, and has served as the President of the Church of Uganda Media Association.

Zambaali’s contributions to journalism have not gone unnoticed. In 2019, he received the Dan Kyazze Award for Best Luganda Radio News Anchor, a testament to his dedication and talent. As he transitions into politics, Zambaali hopes to bring the same level of commitment and excellence to his new role.

For Zambali, the journey to politics is not just about achieving personal success but about fulfilling a deeper calling to serve. “My role will be to voice the issues affecting them, while they back me to address those concerns,” he said. With his passion, experience, and the support of the people, Zambaali is poised to make a meaningful impact in Nansana Municipality and beyond.

As the 2026 elections approach, Zambaali’s story serves as an inspiration to many, proving that with determination and a clear vision, dreams can indeed become reality. His journey from news anchor to political aspirant is a testament to the power of perseverance and the belief that one person can make a difference.
