Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, today inspected the soon-to-be-opened UPDF National Referral Hospital in Mbuya, a state-of-the-art medical facility set to transform healthcare for soldiers and civilians alike. The high-tech hospital, which will be officially commissioned by President Yoweri Museveni, represents a major leap forward in Uganda’s medical capabilities.

During his afternoon visit, Gen. Kainerugaba carefully examined the facility’s advanced equipment and modern infrastructure. Guided by Professor Ben Mbonye, he walked through all six blocks of the hospital, observing its various specialized units including emergency care sections, physiotherapy centers, and VIP wards. One standout feature is the hospital’s helipad, which will allow for rapid emergency airlifts in critical situations.

This inspection reflects Gen. Kainerugaba’s strong commitment to improving welfare standards within the UPDF. Since becoming Chief of Defence Forces last year, he has consistently pushed for better healthcare services, quality education for soldiers’ children, and modernization of military resources. His leadership has focused on ensuring troops receive proper support to carry out their duties effectively.

The hospital visit included other senior officials from the Ministry of Defence, including Permanent Secretary Rosette Byengoma and Undersecretary Edith Buturo. Their presence underscored the importance of this project for Uganda’s military and civilian populations.

When operational, this referral hospital promises to set new standards in Uganda’s health sector. Its advanced facilities will not only serve military personnel and their families but will also be available to the general public. The establishment represents a significant investment in the country’s medical infrastructure and demonstrates the UPDF’s growing role in national development beyond traditional security functions.

The modern facility is expected to reduce the need for overseas medical referrals while providing quality care comparable to regional standards. Its completion marks an important milestone in Uganda’s journey toward self-reliance in specialized healthcare services.

As Gen. Kainerugaba concluded his inspection, it was clear that this hospital will soon become a cornerstone of Uganda’s medical system, blending military precision with civilian healthcare needs to serve the nation.
