General Muhoozi Quits Social Media: Focuses on Military Work

A Ten-Year Stint on X Comes to an End
The Chief of Defence Forces and the First Son of Uganda, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has deactivated his social media account on X, an app formerly known as Twitter, where he had been actively present for ten years. The move, announced just six hours before his account disappeared, leaves over a million followers wondering about his next steps.

Muhoozi, whose tweets are often bold and controversial, joined the platform in August 2014. Over time, his tweets have incited debate, won him a huge following, and sometimes rattled Uganda’s relations with other countries. In his farewell message, Muhoozi explained his decision to step away, citing his need to focus on military responsibilities under the guidance of his faith.

A Farewell Message Full of Promise

In his final statement, Muhoozi reflected on his decade-long presence on the platform: “To all my dear followers, it has been a great whirlwind and rousing journey together on these streets for the last 10 years since 2014. However, the time has now come under the instructions and blessings of my Lord Jesus Christ to leave and concentrate on His army, the UPDF.”

In his exit from the platform, however, Muhoozi did not rule out returning to social media:
“At an appropriate time, when it becomes important and after fulfilling the Almighty God’s immediate assignment to restore everlasting peace and security to all His people in our region, we shall always re-converge.”

He asked his followers to be loyal to Uganda and President Yoweri Museveni, his father, who has been in power since 1986.

Controversies and Global Reactions
The few times Muhoozi used X were not quiet at all. His tweets often became headlines, locally and globally. Some of the controversial tweets he has written include: threats to expel the US Ambassador to Uganda and bold claims of capturing Nairobi and Sudan. The statements have elicited outrage and strained Uganda’s diplomatic relations.

Beyond politics, Muhoozi also used the platform in the glorification of women: he often praised his wife, Charlotte; and even went to an extent of jokingly expressing admiration for American pop star Beyoncé.

Hints at Political Aspirations

Muhoozi’s departure from social media has reignited speculation about his political ambitions. Over the years, he has used the platform to drop hints about running for president, a role currently held by his father. His tweets often contained cryptic messages about his vision for Uganda’s future, fueling debate about whether he is preparing for a transition of power.

While for some of his supporters, this was evidence of his desire to reach out to the public, for critics it was a way to unnecessarily court controversy and divisive rhetoric.

Focus on the Military, for Now
For now, General Muhoozi has thrown his focus on duties in the UPDF. He promised to ensure peace and security in the region, thus leaving his followers in the dark over his political and public future.

His exit from X brings the curtain down on one of the most dramatic chapters in Uganda’s social media space. But with his hint at probably returning, the question lingers: will Muhoozi return as a military leader, presidential candidate, or something entirely different?

As the dust settles, one thing is clear: Muhoozi might be gone from the online space, but his influence in Uganda’s political and military circles is far from over.
