Nkumba, Uganda—The State Minister for Energy and Mineral Development (Minerals), Phiona Nyamutoro, has called on student leaders to become ambassadors of patriotism in institutions of learning. Speaking at the launch of a two-week patriotism training program at Nkumba University, Minister Nyamutoro called on the young leaders to inspire others through leading by example in regard to love and dedication to their country.
The event brought together over 800 student leaders from higher institutions of learning across Uganda. Representing the Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among, Nyamutoro delivered an empowering message, emphasizing the importance of embracing and celebrating Ugandan heritage.
Celebrating Ugandan Identity
“I am happy to see the young people being trained to passionately show love for their country,” Nyamutoro said. “Uganda is all that we have. You can change many things in life, but being Ugandan is something we should cherish and never take for granted.”
She noted that this will create unity and a sense of responsibility among the youth in Uganda. “Within this group are future leaders. I urge you to make the most of this opportunity and go back to your communities to inspire other young people,” she added.
A Focus on Civic Responsibility
The patriotism training program, organized by the National Secretariat for Patriotism Corps, commenced on January 3, 2025. This will impart in the student leaders essential skills and knowledge to become informed, responsible, and patriotic leaders. The initiative underlines the importance of civic responsibility and calls on participants to actively contribute to shaping Uganda’s future.
Key Goals of the Training
The main objectives of the program are:
- Instilling a sense of national pride and unity.
- Encouraging young leaders to embrace civic duties and responsibilities.
- Preparing participants to inspire patriotism within their respective institutions and communities.
Building a Unified Nation
Nyamutoro commended the NSPC for its effort in instilling patriotism among Ugandans, noting that such programs are important in strengthening the spirit of citizenship. “Patriotism unites us and reminds us of our shared responsibility to build a better Uganda,” she said.
During the course of the training, participants will engage in discussions, workshops, and activities aimed at equipping them with leadership skills while solidifying their appreciation for national values and history.
Inspiring the Next Generation
As they progress through training, the student leaders are encouraged to take what they learn back to their institutions, where they can serve as role models and mentors. Nyamutoro’s message really resonated with the participants, many of whom expressed enthusiasm about taking their newfound knowledge and applying it in a way that would create change.
“This training is an eye-opener,” added one student leader. “It reminds us of the power of unity and the importance of working together to achieve a common goal for our country.”
A Call to Action
Minister Nyamutoro’s address during the Nkumba University event reminded one of the transformation that is possible with youths in leadership positions. With such training that empowers them to foster patriotism and unity, Uganda is literally investing in its future of cohesion and brightness.
This is not a training program; it is a movement to bring back some sense of pride and responsibility in our youth,” Nyamutoro concluded. “The future of Uganda lies in the hands of its youth, and it is through their patriotism and dedication that our nation will thrive.
