Minister Rwamirama Challenges ERAM to Groom Next-Generation Vets at 30th Anniversary

As ERAM Uganda Limited marked three decades of service to the nation’s livestock industry, the Ministry of Animal Industry has urged the company to deepen its investment in research, innovation, and the training of young veterinary professionals. The call came during a colorful ceremony held Thursday at ERAM’s new head office on Hoima Road–Bakuli, where the company celebrated 30 years of advancing animal health and livestock productivity in Uganda.

Lt. Col (Rtd) Bright Rwamirama, the Minister of State for Animal Industry, praised ERAM for its enduring contribution to the livestock sector, noting that the company has been a reliable partner in promoting animal welfare, disease control, and productivity among farmers. He commended the founders and staff for their dedication, professionalism, and adherence to quality standards, urging them to maintain the same spirit in the decades ahead. “For three decades, ERAM has supported our livestock industry through quality products, technical expertise, and sustainable health solutions,” Rwamirama said. “As you celebrate this milestone, I encourage you to invest further in research, local manufacturing, and in nurturing the next generation of veterinary professionals who will sustain the future of this vital industry.”

Founded in 1995 by Edward Muhigirwa, Richard Mucunguzi, and Dr. Alice Hope Banga, ERAM Uganda Limited made history as the country’s first veterinary pharmacy incorporated through the National Drug Authority. What began as a modest shop in Kampala’s Container Village has since grown into one of Uganda’s leading veterinary and pharmaceutical companies, serving farmers, veterinarians, and animal health experts nationwide. Over the years, ERAM has built a reputation for quality and reliability, establishing partnerships with global manufacturers and introducing science-based products that have improved livestock health and farmer livelihoods.

Speaking during the event, ERAM’s Managing Director, Edward Muhigirwa, reflected on the company’s journey, describing it as a story of resilience, innovation, and commitment to the farming community. “Our focus remains clear: to provide trusted, science-based solutions that promote healthier animals, healthier people, and ultimately, a healthier Uganda,” he said. Muhigirwa reaffirmed ERAM’s pledge to support government efforts in improving animal health systems, combating livestock diseases, and strengthening veterinary services through collaboration and knowledge sharing.

Dr. Alice Hope Banga, the company’s Director of Finance and Administration, emphasized ERAM’s role in capacity building and professional development within the veterinary field. She noted that the company has continuously invested in training programs to equip young veterinarians and animal health workers with the technical expertise required to meet modern challenges in livestock management. “We are proud of our journey and our partnerships with global manufacturers,” Dr. Banga said. “Our commitment to advancing veterinary knowledge in Uganda remains unwavering, and we are excited about what the future holds for innovation in animal health.”

The event also marked the official opening of ERAM’s new head office, a symbol of its growth, stability, and long-term commitment to the livestock sector. The state-of-the-art facility represents the company’s evolution from a small retail outlet to a modern enterprise with a strong presence across Uganda. Guests at the ceremony, including government officials, veterinarians, farmers, and business partners, lauded ERAM’s consistency and contribution to national development.

Minister Rwamirama reminded the audience that animal health plays a central role in food security, income generation, and public health, urging continued collaboration between the private sector and government to build a resilient agricultural economy. He stressed that Uganda’s vision for sustainable livestock production depends on innovation and the ability to train skilled professionals who can respond to the sector’s growing demands.

As ERAM Uganda Limited looks toward the future, its leadership reaffirmed the company’s mission to remain a trusted ally to farmers and veterinarians, promoting animal welfare and contributing to Uganda’s broader agricultural transformation. Thirty years on, ERAM stands as a testament to how local enterprise, guided by science and service, can shape the destiny of an entire industry, one healthier animal at a time.
