MPs Raise Shs150 Million to Support Late Ssegirinya’s Family

A Show of Solidarity for a Beloved Leader
Members of the Parliament of Uganda have all converged to the movement of contributing Shs150 million to the family of late Kawempe North MP, Muhammad Ssegirinya. The initiative followed the tragic death of the young legislator on Thursday, January 8, 2025, at Rubaga Hospital.

The contribution was made during a special parliamentary session on Friday, January 10, where MPs each pledged Shs300,000. The session was held to honor Ssegirinya’s service and reflect on his legacy.

Speaker Leads Tributes to Ssegirinya

Speaker of Parliament Anita Among led heartfelt tributes to the late MP, describing him as a tireless advocate for grassroots development and a champion for the rights of ordinary Ugandans.

“I met with the family of our late brother, Hon. Muhammad Ssegirinya, in respect of arrangements for a dignified send-off. He served the people of Kawempe North with great commitment, and his dedication will be deeply missed,” Among said.

Earlier, the Speaker had met Ssegirinya’s family at Parliament, condoling with them and promising support during this tragic moment of their lives.

A Leader Gone Too Soon

The late Ssegirinya was only 37 years old. He had been battling severe health challenges since his release from prison, despite receiving medical attention. His condition kept worsening, leading to his death.

News of his death sent shockwaves across the country as his constituents and colleagues mourned the loss of a leader who had dedicated himself to service, stood firm for what was rightfully his people’s interest in Kawempe North.

A Legacy of Service and Advocacy

Ssegirinya drew great respect because of his passionate fight for the needs of his constituents. His leadership style was inbred with grassroots engagement and focusing on the needs of the underprivileged.

He championed causes such as healthcare access, education, and poverty alleviation throughout his time in office. He was popular with many because of his improvement of living conditions in Kawempe North, hence the nickname “Mr. Update” for his frequent communication with the public.

Final Farewell Plans Underway

Preparations to lay Ssegirinya to rest are complete. The late MP will be buried this Sunday, January 12, in Masaka District, as relatives, friends, and well-wishers attend his burial to pay their last respects to the deceased.

The parliamentary contribution of Shs150 million will help the family in its trying moment and give the late legislator a decent send-off.

A Call to Remember His Vision

As Parliament mourned the loss of one of its own, Speaker Anita Among called upon MPs and the public to always remember Ssegirinya through the struggle he had started. “Let us remember his dedication to the people of Kawempe North and try to uphold his vision for a better Uganda,” she added.

Ssegirinya’s death is a big loss not only to the family and his constituents but to the nation at large. His selfless commitment to service and the determination to uplift others will be remembered as part of his legacy.
