Mpuuga Holds Back on Presidential Bid Announcement Ahead of Democratic Front Launch

Mathias Mpuuga, the former Leader of the Opposition in Uganda, has delayed announcing whether he will run for the presidency of the newly formed Democratic Front (DF), saying he will make his decision after the party’s national conference this Thursday in Masaka.

Mpuuga, who also serves as the MP for Nyendo Mukungwe, told reporters that while he is open to contesting for the party’s leadership or even its presidential ticket, now is not the right time to make a final declaration. “It is not in my space right now,” he said. “But the decision will come after the conference on Thursday.”

The upcoming conference marks the official launch of the Democratic Front as a political party and will include elections for its first leadership committee. Delegates are expected to start arriving in Masaka on Wednesday to finalize preparations for the event.

Political analyst Emmanuel Dombo praised Mpuuga’s cautious approach, calling it a sign of political maturity. He described Mpuuga as an intelligent leader whose potential has been acknowledged by influential figures, including the Kabaka of Buganda and the leadership of the National Unity Platform (NUP).

The Democratic Front is one of several new political groups aiming to reshape Uganda’s opposition ahead of the 2026 general elections. By holding off on his announcement, Mpuuga appears to be carefully weighing his options before committing to a leadership bid. His decision could significantly influence the direction of the party and the broader opposition movement in the country.

For now, all eyes remain on Thursday’s conference, where Mpuuga’s next move—and the future of the Democratic Front—will become clearer.
