The National Agricultural Research Organisation is taking centre stage at the Comprehensive African Agricultural Development Programme CAADP 2025 Summit hosted at Speke Resort Munyonyo in Kampala. This high-profile gathering of agricultural experts, policymakers, and innovators aims at propelling economic growth and eradicating hunger through agriculture-led development.
The Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme is an African Union-inspired programme that converges with the AU’s Agenda 2063 to increase agricultural productivity, improve public investment in agriculture, and reduce poverty across the continent. The active participation of NARO at the summit testifies to Uganda’s commitment to a contribution toward this continental vision.
NARO Showcases Groundbreaking Innovations
NARO is taking part, led by its Director General Dr. Yona Baguma, in key plenary sessions but has also managed to put on a vibrant exhibition. This showcases some of the organization’s cutting-edge research, innovations, and technologies designed to transform Uganda’s agricultural sector.
The NARO showcase displays climate-smart agricultural practices, improved crop and livestock technologies, and more to tackle pressing challenges in food security. This aligns well with NARO’s work to fulfill the CAADP agenda through sustainable practice efforts that are part of combating hunger for agricultural growth.
Driving Change Through Science
According to Dr. Baguma, NARO was very critical for the African agriculture agenda:
We deal in research on practical solutions to ensure food security and empowering farmers. We shall ring changes into the face of agriculture in Uganda, nay the continent, with our technologies and innovations.
Some of the innovations by the organization include drought-resistant crop varieties, pest-resistant seeds, and sustainable farming techniques, all addressing the peculiar challenges faced by African farmers. Such innovations not only raise yields but also make the crops resilient to climate change, among other exogenous shocks.
Supporting Food Security and Economic Growth
At the summit, NARO has so far impressed delegates, who saluted the organization’s pro-active stance towards agricultural challenges. The exhibition gives NARO the opportunity to impress on participants various insights into its diverse programs, including the ones aimed at increasing livestock productivity and modernizing agriculture.
In that sense, through its work, NARO bridges the gap between research and practice so that farmers will benefit directly from scientific advances. This approach is necessary if the ambitious targets set out by CAADP-to eradicate hunger and reduce poverty throughout Africa-are to be met.
A Vision for the Future
Continuously inspired by the dialogue and collaboration of CAADP 2025, the presence of NARO serves to attest to Uganda’s leadership in agricultural research and innovation. It evidences how science and technology are playing an important role in shaping the future of sustainable agriculture on the African continent.
In addition, meeting food security needs and contributing to economic growth, NARO advances not only Uganda’s but also the broader development agenda of the continent in many ways.
The CAADP Summit ends with a call for devoted transformation in agriculture, with NARO towering above other centers in terms of progress and innovation in the sector.
As Africa comes together to transform its agricultural systems, institutions like NARO show the power of research and innovation in overcoming challenges and opening up opportunities. The work is contributing to a food-secure and prosperous continent in line with the goals set out in the AU’s Agenda 2063.
