NRM Ignites Busoga as Museveni’s Visit Draws Near

The political rhythm in Busoga has grown louder and more vibrant in recent days as the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) steps up its mobilisation ahead of President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni’s highly anticipated visit to the sub-region in early November. With the 2026 general elections inching closer, the yellow wave is once again sweeping across Busoga, as party leaders rally supporters under the slogan “Protecting the Gains.”

From Bugiri to Iganga, Namayingo to Kaliro, the NRM has embarked on an ambitious activation campaign aimed at energising its grassroots structures and reminding voters of the party’s long-standing message of stability, peace, and continuity. The drives, led by Owekitibwa Hellen Namutamba from the Office of the President, have brought together local leaders, elderly groups, ghetto youth, and women entrepreneurs in what she described as “a reaffirmation of Busoga’s loyalty and importance to the Movement’s journey.”

Speaking at one of the engagements in Iganga Municipality, Namutamba told cheering supporters that the campaign trail is structured to reach every corner of Busoga, ensuring no district is left behind. She said the mobilisation is not just about politics but about deepening the party’s bond with communities that have been central to Uganda’s transformation. “I have been sent by Mama Kadaga and President Museveni to remind you that we support our card bearers and our President,” Namutamba said passionately. “We started by meeting the elderly in Nakalama and other areas because everyone matters. I want to confirm to you that the President is soon visiting us in November, and security teams are finalizing the venues.”

The activation teams began their engagements with elderly persons and youth groups, emphasizing inclusivity and participation. The ghetto youth, many of whom have benefited from government financial inclusion programs, were at the heart of the discussions. Namutamba highlighted that these young people represent the new face of NRM’s development agenda, vibrant, ambitious, and determined to protect the progress made under the Movement’s leadership. “This campaign is about ownership,” she said. “The NRM’s success has always depended on the people, and Busoga remains one of our strongest pillars.”

According to her, the mobilisation activities will continue in a district-to-district format, as preparations for the President’s visit move into high gear. Each event will be coordinated with local security officials to confirm venues and crowd management protocols. In Iganga, she revealed that the Busoga presidential campaigns are scheduled to officially kick off on September 15, with President Museveni expected in Iganga on September 17, setting the stage for what many observers see as the opening of the NRM’s full campaign season.

Local leaders have warmly welcomed the upcoming presidential visit, viewing it as a moment for dialogue and reflection. Ezera Gabula, the Iganga District Chairperson, said the visit presents a chance for leaders to engage directly with the President about ongoing projects and future plans. “While we have seen major developments under this government, such as the plans to restore Busoga University, there’s still work to be done,” he said. “That’s why continued support for our party chairman is crucial—to sustain this progress and ensure Busoga keeps rising.”

For others like Ojasi Swaibu, the NRM flag bearer for the Iganga Municipality MP seat, the visit is both symbolic and practical. “Our town still has challenges that we need to tell the President and Mama Kadaga about,” he said. “This is our chance to speak directly and find solutions together.” His remarks echoed the sentiments of many residents who see the visit as a bridge between leadership and the everyday realities of the people.

In town squares, trading centers, and village gatherings across Busoga, yellow flags flutter in the breeze as chants of “Tukulembe!” fill the air. Residents say the NRM’s presence has rekindled enthusiasm, with many pledging unwavering support for the party’s candidates and President Museveni in the upcoming elections. Some spoke proudly of improved infrastructure, better access to education, and youth empowerment programs that have changed lives in their communities.

As the countdown to November begins, Busoga stands at the center of Uganda’s political spotlight once again. The mobilisation has not only reignited the Movement’s base but also reminded the nation of the deep roots that NRM continues to cultivate among its supporters. For the people of Busoga, the coming visit is more than a campaign stop, it is a reaffirmation of their enduring place in the country’s political and development story.
