The football world is in shock after the tragic death of Vipers’ Nigerian striker, Abubakar Lawal. The talented forward lost his life on Monday morning following a motor accident on Entebbe Road in Kampala, Uganda. His club, Vipers SC, confirmed the heartbreaking news in an official statement.
“We are deeply saddened to announce the sudden and untimely passing of our beloved player, Abubakar Lawal, who left us this morning,” the statement read. “His body has been transferred to a medical facility for post-mortem examination. Funeral arrangements will be communicated in due course. Our thoughts and prayers are with Lawal’s family, club fans, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time.”
Lawal, who was just 29 years old, had been a key part of the Vipers squad since joining the club in July 2022. Before moving to Uganda, he played for AS Kigali in Rwanda, where he spent two years. His career also saw him shine in his home country with Nasarawa United.
During his time at Vipers, Lawal played 24 matches across the Uganda Premier League and the CAF Champions League. He made history for the club by scoring their first-ever goal in the group stages of the CAF Champions League against Raja Casablanca.
His last involvement with the team was just three days before the accident, when he was an unused substitute in Vipers’ victory over Mbarara City in the Uganda Cup.
The news of his passing has sent shockwaves across the football fraternity. Fans, teammates, and fellow footballers have flooded social media with tributes, remembering him as a talented player and a great personality.
“Rest in peace, Lawal. You were a warrior on the field and a brother off it. We will miss you forever,” one of his teammates wrote.
“Life is unpredictable. Just a few days ago, he was with us, smiling and training. Now he is gone. This is so painful,” a devastated fan posted.
Vipers SC will now have to continue their season without one of their most beloved players. However, his contributions to the team and his impact on Ugandan football will never be forgotten.
As the club and Lawal’s family prepare for his final send-off, the entire football community stands in solidarity, mourning a life taken too soon. The memories of his skill, passion, and dedication to the game will remain in the hearts of those who watched him play.
Rest in peace, Abubakar Lawal.
