12 Years of Steadfast Leadership: Katikkiro Mayiga Celebrates Milestone in Buganda Kingdom

The halls of Butikkiro in Mengo buzzed with celebration as Charles Peter Mayiga marked twelve remarkable years as Katikkiro (Prime Minister) of Buganda Kingdom. The occasion, filled with gratitude and reflection, brought together dignitaries, cultural leaders, and loyal subjects to honor a leader whose tenure has shaped the kingdom’s modern identity.

The event, held on May 13, 2025, carried deep symbolism. Twelve years earlier, Mayiga had received the Ddamula—the royal mace representing authority in Buganda—from Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II. Since then, his leadership has navigated challenges, celebrated triumphs, and steered the kingdom toward progress while preserving its cultural soul.

The thanksgiving ceremony drew a distinguished crowd, including Princess Dorothy Nassolo, Bishop Moses Banja of Namirembe Diocese, and Members of Parliament from the Buganda Caucus. Former and current ministers in the Kabaka’s government, religious leaders, and representatives from community organizations also joined the celebration. Among them was Ambassador Godfrey Kirumira, Uganda’s Honorary Consul to Namibia, alongside members of the Twezimbe Committee, which spearheaded the successful Ettofaali fundraising drive—a testament to Mayiga’s ability to mobilize grassroots support.

In his address, Mayiga expressed heartfelt gratitude to Kabaka Mutebi for entrusting him with the kingdom’s leadership. He acknowledged the divine grace that sustained him through both peaceful and turbulent times, describing his journey as one marked by “valleys and rivers.” These obstacles, he noted, only strengthened his resolve to serve the people of Buganda with unwavering dedication.

Looking ahead, Mayiga urged the Baganda to remain united and purposeful. “As we begin the 13th year of this journey, I call upon all Baganda to act wisely and work together,” he said. “Unity is the foundation upon which we will restore Buganda to its rightful glory.” His words resonated deeply, reflecting his longstanding commitment to fostering solidarity among the kingdom’s subjects.

A key highlight of the event was the launch of the Luganda version of Kabaka ku Namulondo (“The King on the Throne”). Mayiga encouraged every Muganda to read the book, emphasizing the importance of understanding the kingdom’s history and values. He also called on families and communities to document their own histories, ensuring that future generations remain connected to their heritage.

The Katikkiro’s leadership drew widespread acclaim from attendees. Prince Ronald Mulondo, Kangawo of Bulemeezi, praised Mayiga for his visionary and disciplined stewardship. Members of Parliament, including Muwanga Kivumbi and Joyce Bagala, commended his work and pledged continued collaboration on initiatives benefiting the kingdom.

Students from Buddo Secondary School added a touch of youthful energy to the event, performing a song celebrating Mayiga’s resilience and loyalty to the Kabaka. Their performance underscored the Katikkiro’s impact on younger generations, many of whom have grown up under his leadership.

The Katikkiro is more than an administrator; he is the chief executive of the Kabaka’s government, responsible for implementing royal directives, coordinating county chiefs, and preserving Buganda’s cultural legacy. Mayiga has excelled in this role, balancing tradition with modernity. Under his leadership, initiatives like Buganda ku Ntikko have empowered youth, promoted education, and spurred economic growth.

His tenure has also strengthened Buganda’s voice in national affairs, serving as a bridge between the kingdom and Uganda’s political landscape. Through diplomacy and pragmatism, he has maintained the kingdom’s relevance while safeguarding its autonomy.

As the ceremony concluded, Mayiga reaffirmed his commitment to serve with integrity, uphold cultural traditions, and foster unity under Kabaka Mutebi’s guidance. The past twelve years stand as a testament to his leadership—marked by challenges overcome, traditions upheld, and a kingdom revitalized.

For Buganda, Mayiga’s milestone is not just a celebration of one man’s service but a reflection of the kingdom’s enduring strength. As he steps into his thirteenth year, the path ahead remains clear: to continue building a Buganda that honors its past while embracing the future.
